Number of Performances

Performances may include a combination of Master Classes and Recitals. 

The student will be awarded a composer statuette after completing three performances during a given school year.  Each new school year will feature a specific composer.  Upon completing six or more performances, the student will receive the Diane Battersby Memorial Award (trophy).

Senior Plaque

A plaque is awarded to a High School senior who has studied for a minimum of three years with a PVMTA member.  The student must be an active participant in PVMTA student events during their senior year or have been a regular participant in the preceding years.  This is a performance participation award and not related to any achievement level.

 

Achievement Levels

A certificate for a given achievement level will be awarded to students who perform from memory a minimum of two compositions selected from at least two of the historical periods indicated below.  A composition that meets similar technical and musical standards as those suggested for each achievement level will also qualify.

 

Elementary

A 17th or 18th century composition

One movement of an easy Sonatina or a Sonatina having only one movement

Solo of choice

 

Early Intermediate

Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Any selection from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach

Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty:  Clementi – Sonatina op. 36, No. 1 or 2 any movement

Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Burgmüller - Twenty-five Easy and Progressive Studies, op. 100; Kabalevsky - Twenty-four Little Pieces, op. 39 or any solo by Gillock, Nevin, Olson, etc.

 

Mid-Intermediate

Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Any selection from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach

Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Kuhlau - Sonatina, op. 55, No. 1, either movement

Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Any selection from Schumann Album for the Young, op. 68

 

Late Intermediate

Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Bach - Twelve Short Preludes or easier Two-Part Inventions

Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Two contrasting movements of a Sonatina or one movement of a Sonatina and one contrasting piece in cantabile style – Clementi - Sonatina, op. 36, No. 3 & 4

Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Chopin - Mazurka in a minor, op.67, No.4; Debussy - Le Petit Négre, Gillock - Lyric Preludes

 

Early Advanced

Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Bach - Two-Part Inventions (difficult selections)

Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Mozart - Sonata No.1 (K.545) or Beethoven - Sonata op. 49, No. 2

Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Easier Chopin Waltzes, Preludes and Mazurkas, or Debussy - Golliwog’s Cake Walk

 

Advanced

Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Bach - Three-part inventions, suites, (selected dances)

Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Mozart - Sonatas K. 283 or K. 330

Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: More difficult Chopin Waltzes, Preludes and Mazurkas

 

Young Artist

Baroque Period – suggested level of difficulty: Bach - Preludes and Fugues

Classic Period – suggested level of difficulty: Advanced Mozart or Haydn Sonatas, Beethoven - Sonatas op. 14, No. 1

Selection of choice – suggested level of difficulty: Difficult Chopin Nocturnes, Etudes and Ballades or Debussy – Preludes and Etudes

 

J.S. Bach Award

The J.S. Bach Award for a given achievement level will be awarded to students who perform a composition at a PVMTA Recital from the level categories indicated below.

PIANO SYLLABUS

Intermediate – 18 Little Preludes, French Suites and easier Two-Part Inventions (No. 1 C Major, No. 4 d minor, No. 8 F Major & No. 10 G Major)

Senior – Two-Part and Three-Part Inventions

Young Artist – Prelude & Fugue from WTC Book I or II, or 2 Selections from the English Suites or Partitas
